The Q&A Archives: Transplanting Butterfly bush

Question: I live near Harrisburg, PA. When is best time to transplant butterfly bush? Should I trim it back a lot?

Rich Nash

Answer: It would be easiest on your butterfly bush if you waited until spring to move it. After moving you can prune it back.

Butterfly bush, also known as Buddleia Davidii, blooms on new growth. Therefore, stems should be pruned back to 1-2 ft. in early spring to encourage large, lush flower spikes.
