I need to replace flowering shrubs on the north side of the house in this zone 5 climate. They do not get much sunshine.

The group of shrubs you should look at are the rhododendron and azaleas. There are many of these that like shade, flower well and are low maintenance once established in your yard. Look for the 'PJM' rhododendron and 'Northern Lights' azaleas, my favorites. Other shrubs to consider that will do okay in part shade, but not flower as well include spirea, potentilla and viburnum. Goto a local nursery and take a look at these shrubs and see if you like them.
