Our azaleas are about 6-6 1/2 ft. tall. They haven't been pruned in several years an they're covering our windows. Can I cut these back now by about 3 feet and can I use hedge trimmers? My zone is Upper South. Thank you Inna |
Azaleas produce leaf and flower buds all summer long and then open them the following spring. If you prune your azaleas now, you'll be cutting off next year's flowers. If that doesn't bother you, you can prune now. It's best to remove only about one-third of the plant in any one pruning session. Prune them back now by about 2' and then prune them back again in late spring. If you prune before early summer, your azaleas will flower the following year. Hedge trimmers will be effective in pruning and shouldn't hurt your plants. Best wishes with your landscape! |
