If you can wait until after frost has nipped the plant and it goes into dormancy, you can safely prune. If you prune now while the plant is still actively growing it will respond to the pruning by sending out new growth. The new growth will be frost tender and will die back - you'll have to prune it out during the winter months or early next spring. Best wishes with your Knockout Roses!
