The Q&A Archives: Gerber Daisies

Question: Can these be planted outside if so when. I was given a plant and I would like to plant it outside. It is blooming again for the 2nd time I have it on my front porch.Where is the best place to plant it if it can be planted oudoors. Is it an annual or a perennial?

Answer: Gerbera daisies are from Africa where the weather remains warm. I'm afraid your plant won't winter over outdoors in Illinois. It doesn't make a suitable houseplant (although you can try). I've had good success just taking the pot into an unheated garage and keeping the soil on the dry side. It rests during the winter months and when I resume watering in the spring, it comes back to life. Why not give this method a try?
