The Q&A Archives: Overwintering Rhubarb

Question: It was my understanding that rhubarb was a spring crop and that it died back in the winter but mine is still going strong. Should I just leave it alone or prune it back myself or...? Mary Williams Napa, CA

Answer: In mild winter areas, rhubarb may just keep on growing as you have seen. I would still cut it back now and remove all the old foliage only because it may harbor insects or diseases that would infect the new leaves this spring. Other than that, enjoy your rhubarb pies!.
