My River Birch trees dropped their leaves very early this year. They now look like they are dead, only a few leaves remain. What can cause this and are they really dying??

Heat and/or drought stress can cause premature leaf drop on birches. I wouldn't give up on them just yet. If water stress has caused the leaf drop they should green up next spring. Be sure your trees are getting adequate water during the fall months and again in the spring. Best wishes with your trees!
