| Fruit trees are relatively easy to grow. They need lots of sunshine and adequate water to thrive. Most fruit trees need cross-pollination for good fruit set, and you may need to buy more than just one variety. For instance, in regards to your plum tree, two of the most popular varieties of Japanese plum, Burbank and Abundance, are self-unfruitful but will pollinize each other. Stanley and Damson are self-fruitful and will pollinize other European varieties. All other European plums require pollen from another European variety. Peach trees are usually self-fruitful but will set heavier crops if you plant a second peach variety. Citrus trees are for the most part self-unfruitful but if a neighbor has an orange and a lemon tree, your trees should bear fruit. If they flower but do not develop fruit, you'll want to add another orange and another lemon tree to your landscape. Aside from providing lots of sunshine and lots of water, there's not much you need to do to keep your new fruit trees healthy and happy. enjoy! |
