| Red maples are notorious for producing surface roots which is why they are not on our list of most desireable trees for seasonally wet sites such as yours. It appears that heavy clay, alkaline soils induce an even greater degree of surface roots than is normal with Red Maple, so let's hope your soil's pH is neutral to slightly acidic. The surface roots should not be a problem except for walking or mowing beneath the tree. If the roots become unattactive over the years, I'd suggest planting a groundcover to help disguise them.
