Why did the pumpkins in my garden all have mildew on the bottom and how can I prevent it in the future?

If the pumpkins sit on wet soil for extended periods of time they can develop a fungal disease which will shorten their storage life. If you can wipe the mildew off the pumpkin, do so (use 1 part household bleach diluted with 9 parts tap water). To avoid this in the future, set the ripening fruit on a wooden board, a piece of tarpaper or an old shingle. The board, shingle or tarpaper won't become waterlogged and will provide a dry place for your pumpkin to rest.
