The Q&A Archives: Could I have a Japanese maple in Hardiness zone 10

Question: Hello, I live in Wellington Florida, Zone 10.
I am in love with the japanesse maples, but all literature i have read about thse tell me that in my zone the tres would not perform well and could even die.
I have visited or called many local nurseries but they dont have anything like that and are not interested in helping with any idea.
I've found an Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' ItemInternet/Catalog # 100494797 from the Home Depot, I would like to know if the tree could survive and peform well here, and if not, what tree with similar caracteristics could I use.
Thankyou very much, i look forward to your kind answer, i havent found no one that can or wants to help. Thanks a lot

Answer: Salvador,
The very long hot summers and lack of any winter cold would make it an ill adapted choice. I suggest you spend your landscaping dollars on a better adapted plant for your area. Try visiting with the horticulture expert at your local county Extension office. They will be best aware of trees that might most closely match that type but which will do well for you. Their contact info is:
