I want to know if compost starters really work and if so, do they get the pile heating up fester? What sure I use?

Jon,
The compost starter products are fine and may help. However if you build a pile with a good mix of green and brown stuff and keep it moist then things will progress well even without a starter product. Some gardeners add a shovel of rich garden soil or compost to help act as a starter by introducing microbes into the pile. You might want to try that instead of buying a starter product. If your pile lacks green stuff then sprinkle a little high nitrogen fertilizer into the pile and water it in well.
