The Q&A Archives: Grass Seed

Question: does grass seed die, I've had some for years or more, first time planting since I got it?

Thank You,

Answer: Grass seeds loses viability as it ages, especially if it has been exposed to heat or moisture. The best thing to do is to try germinating a handfull of grass seed in a container filled with potting soil. Scatter the seeds on the soil, water them well and keep them moist for 7-10 days. You'll be able to tell whether all, half or some of the seeds are viable. With this information you'll know whether to broadcast the seeds at a normal rate, double rate or triple rate when reseeding your lawn.

Best wishes with your lawn!
