| I bought two knockout roses and want to know when or if I need to prune them. I live in northern va and we have not yet had a freeze. If I need to prune them, how is it to be done. |
| You won't need to prune your knock out roses until next spring, and only if they are growing out of control or you want them to grow faster. Pruning encourages new growth so trimming everything back a bit in the spring will result in lots of new stems and branches, and more flowers. There's not much else you need to do to your roses before winter arrives. Withhold fertilizer and allow any faded flowers to remain on the plant so they form hips. This process, along with the colder weather will signal your roses that it's time for dormancy. They should be fine all winter long and you can prune them back if needed in the spring. |
