Hi, I just bought a house that sits up on a hill. The front yard (close to house) has hard red clay, no grass! How can I make my front yard have grass? I planted pansies in front of 2 windows, but between them and the rest of the front yard, its just clay. Also between the clay and the very front yard (close to road) is evergreen? I think that's what it's called. i think it was put there due to it being steep in that area of the yard. Its very messy, uneven. Help!!!!!!!!!!

Stephanie,

If the area receives adequate sunlight you should be able to get grass to grow there. Your county extension office has free information on planting and caring for lawns in your area. The following websites should also be very helpful:

Prior to planting grass I suggest you loosen the soil a view inches deep with the rototiller. Then rake the area smooth prior to laying the sod.

The evergreens can be trimmed smooth the appearance out a bit if you wish but this is not usually considered necessary.
