Heliotrope is a tender plant so as long as temperatures remain above freezing this winter, it should grow nicely for you. Although it likes morning sun, it will need afternoon shade in the desert. I'd vote for planting it in a container and sinking the container into the planter in your patio, then moving it to a more protected place when the weather warms and the sunshine becomes stronger in March or April. As long as you protect it from hot sunshine, it should be happy. Enjoy!
