The Q&A Archives: What kind of holly shrub is shown in the ad?

Question: What type of holly is pictured in today's Home Depot-Garden Club home page? Is it naturally

Answer: I'm afraid the photo was enhanced to make it stand out on the page. There are some variegated types of hollies (Ilex aquifolium variegata), but they have white leaf margins along with some spots or blotches. Another plant you might consider is Osmanthus. It has the same leaf shape as a holly but it is smaller and slower growing than a standard holly. The green leaves are daubed with spots of creamy white, gray-green, and yellow-green.
