The Q&A Archives: winter flowers

Question: What flowers besides kale and pansies can I plant now. I live in a home for my firt time. I panted plecthanus and it died. My pansies lived and the red cyclamen blooms died but the leaves at the base that are verigated in color look fine. What flowers and shrubs would be good. I love color!

Answer: Winter weather in Central Texas will dictate which plants will perform in your garden after the month of October. Ornamental kale, pansies, primroses, cyclamen and snapdragons are the most cold tolerant. Early flowering bulbs such as grape hyacinths and crocus are also good choices, but they need to be planted in late summer so they can establish their roots prior to blooming. Aside from the above, there aren't many reliable plants for you to add to your garden for winter bloom. Wish I had more suggestions!
