Selective herbicides are those with a single purpose. They will either target broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, or grassy weeds (those with grasslike blades for leaves). Non-selective herbicides will kill all vegetation it comes in contact with. Selective herbicides such as a broadleaf weed killer are safe to use on lawns because they have no effect against grass; non-selective herbicides will kill both the broadleaf weeds and the grass so should not be used on lawns. Hope this answers your question.
