The answer depends upon what types of weeds are growing in the areas and just how small the areas are. I prefer to hand pull existing weeds and then spread a thick mulch (either organic such as compost or bark chips, or inorganic such as gravel) to keep sunlight from penetrating to the soil so weed seeds won't germinate. A second approach would be to pull the existing weeds and then sprinkle a pre-emergent such a Preen over the area. Pre-emergents will not control existing weeds but will keep new weed seeds from germinating and thereby keep the area weed free. If you decide to use herbicides, be sure to follow label directions. Best wishes with your garden!
