The Q&A Archives: Fertilizers

Question: What is the difference between a liquid fertilizer and a slow release fertilizer?

Answer: A liquid fertilizer is obviously liquid and is generally sprayed onto the foliage as well as onto the soil above the root system of the plant. One benefit of liquid ferilizers is that they are immediately available to the plant. A drawback, though, is that there is no residual action. Slow release fertilizers are granuals and are coated with various thicknesses of clay. As you water or when it rains, the clay dissolves, releasing the fertilizer.
