| Rugosa roses prefer to be planted in full sun in slightly alkaline, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, but they are hardy and willing to grow in less fertile soil (just look at the Atlantic coastline - they thrive in the sand and persistent winds, too!). If you want to create a hedge, set the plants about 3' apart. For specimen plants, you can space them 5' or 6' apart. For the first couple of years, limit pruning to cutting back any gangly canes. In the third year, you can beginto cut out the old wood as it becomes dark in color. Avoid the annual heading-back type of pruning used on other roses. Good luck with your new planting! |
