Clover tends to appear in lawns that are under-fertilized and in areas where grass is having trouble thriving. Start by running some basic soil tests to check the fertility and soil pH. The test results will help you determine how much fertilizer you should use and whether or not lime would be helpful. Lime is used to adjust the pH; the correct pH helps the grass absorb the fertilizer. Soil should be tested every few years, at the very least. All the soil test kits and amendments you need are available at The Home Depot.
