The Q&A Archives: Replacing Stones with Lawn

Question: The new house I have moved into has small stones throughout the backyard and underneath there appears to be a black liner. What is the best way to get rid of it, so that I can start building a new lawn?

Answer: You will need to remove the gravel and then take up the underlying landscape fabric. Then loosen the soil down at least 6 inches and work in a generous amount of compost. Also, run some basic soil tests to check the fertility and soil pH. You will find a wide variety of soil test kits at The Home Depot. Add fertilizer and amendments as indicated by the soil tests. Then level the area and rake the surface smooth. At this point you will be ready to plant your new lawn.
