A healthy lawn effectively crowds out most weeds. But Bermuda/St. Augustine grass that is not properly maintained or is weakened by insects or disease can be invaded by grassy and broadleaved weeds. Annual grassy weeds such as fescue, annual bluegrass and crabgrass are best controlled by timely applications of preemergence herbicides. There are no post-emergent herbicides for grassy weeds registered for use in Bermuda/St. Augustine lawns so hand digging is your best option. Once you put your lawn on a regular maintenance schedule, it should grow thick enough to crowd out any potential weeds.
