There are lots of colorful perennials that will grow well in containers in your gardening region. Here are a few suggestions: Ladybells (Adenophora lilifolia) grows 12-18" blue bell-like flowers on spikes in late summer. Bishop's Weed (Aegopodium) grows 10-15" leaves green, white margins. Bugleweed (Ajuga varieties) 6" blue/foliage, flowers in May/June. Lady's Mantle 12-18" yellow flowers in late spring/summer. Canadian (wild) Ginger grows 9-12" beautiful foliage. European Ginger grows 4-6" glossy-green, heart-shaped leaves. Astilbe (Spirea or Goatsbeard) 18-36" white, pink, red, lavender. Hardy Begonia (Begonia grandis) 15-24" H. pink flowers. Bergenia or Saxifrage grows 10-16" pink, white, or red flowers. Siberian Bugloss (perennial forget me not) grows 18" blue flowers/large, rounded leaves. Bellflower (Campanula species and hybrids) variable blue or white flowers. Hardy Plumbago 6-10" blue flowers/red fall foliage. Turtlehead (Chelone obliqua) grows 2-3' purple, white flowers. Snakeroot (or Bugbane) 3-6' white flowers. Dwarf Bleeding Heart grows 12-15" and flowers in white or pink. In addition to these, you could plant coleus, lobelia, impatiens and pansies.
