My lawn has a lot of weeds and clover. It is mostly green and thin in some places. What would you recommmend to make my lawn look nice? I do not want to use chemicals. |
To get a marginal lawn looking better, try these techniques. Dethatch the lawn this spring either renting a machine or raking the lawn vigorously to remove old grass. Do so while wearing golf shoes and you will be aerating the lawn at the same time. Fertilize this spring with a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer. There are organic lawn fertilizers that also work well such as Lawn Restore. You can spread a 1 inch thick layer of compost over the whole lawn to help build up the soil. When mowing, try to mow at 3 inchestall all summer. The taller the grass, the less likely weeds will invade and it creates a lusher carpet of green. Clover is actually good for the lawn since it fixes nitrogen, so I'd leave it in there. If you have tough weeds such as dandelions, try digging them out or paying the kids to do it!
