If someone purchases bare root plants (e.g. shrubs, trees, etc.) how long can you wait before planting them in the ground?

The plants should go into the ground as soon as practical, even if they are still dormant. If the root systems dries out, the plant will die. If you can't plant immediately, you'll need to cover the roots with moist sawdust, sand or soil. This will only work for a day or two, though. Best wishes with your new plants!
