We have an area between our driveway and fence approx 2-3 feet wide and approx 50 feet long. Unfortunately the area does not get much light (only a few hours of diffused light in the afternoon). We would like a tall non-woody hedge at least 6 feet tall in which the foliage does not spread over the driveway. We had Japanese Yews which are slowly going kaput. Any suggestions?

Some of the most popular evergreen shrubs for privacy screens include those with naturally dense, columnar or pyramidal shapes. Some plants for you to consider include clumping bamboo, Cupressocyparis leylandii (Leyland cypress), Thuja (arborvitae) and columnar Junipers. Bamboo is the fastest growing, followed by Thuja and Leyland cypress. If you have lots of time for your hedge to develop, Laurel, Photinia, Escallonia and Viburnum are good choices. Naturally, you'd need to prune them annually to keep them within bounds of your narrow planting area. Best wishes with your new plants!
