You should prune your potentilla after the first flush of flowers is finished. As you know, they sometimes will continue flowering throughout the season, but by pruning after flowering in early summer, you'll stimulate new growth to fill in the area you just cut. You can cut them back severely, but I'd recommend not cutting more than 1/3rd of the shrub at any one time. Trim them keeping the round shape.
