The Q&A Archives: Choosing Grass Seed

Question: What types of grass grow well in wet clay soil? Half of the lawn is also in deep shade. Also, where can we buy such grass? As you can see, we live in a moderate climate zone for the U.S.

Answer: A.When you have a range of conditions, it's usually a good idea to plant a grass seed mix. Kentucky blue grass would probably do well in your sunny areas, but suffers in the shade. Turf-type tall fescue can withstand shady areas, and turf-type perennial ryegrass is a good, all-around addition to the mix. Your local garden supply store should carry a variety of grass seed. They may also be able to special order, for example, a "shady mix"..
