When do I need to prune my crepe myrtle bushes and how?

Crepe myrtle blooms on the new growth of the season, so any pruning is best done in late winter to early spring. The primary goal would be removal of any winter-damaged wood or crossing branches. After that, some gardeners prune for size control. Now would be a good time to prune.
