Answer: I have no way of receiving photos so I can't identify the problem but if you dig up one of the patches and take it to your local Cooperative Extension office, they can diagnose the problem. When taking a sample, include some healthy lawn along with some of the diseased lawn. Plant pathologists can look at the samples under a microscope and determine just what the problem is.
