What you describe is called brown spot - the place where the melon was sitting on the ground. You can avoid this type of rot if you set the developing fruits on straw or a piece of wood to keep them from sitting on wet earth. The bugs were probably attracted to the rotting fruit and had a feast before you even noticed they were there. Try raising the melons up off the ground and I think you'll see a big difference in the quality of the fruit. Good luck with your garden!
