The most common method is to have a tree service grind out the stump and the largest roots near the stump, or rent a stump grinder and do it yourself. However, you can leave the stump in place and eventually it will rot away, it will rot faster if covered with soil. Or, you can use one of the stump products, these are applied to holes you drill into the stump and eventually the stump can be burned (burning may not be legal where you live, so check to make sure). Or, you could cover it with a piece of flagstone and use it as a platform to display an attractive sculpture or container of flowers. I hope this gives you some ideas.
