| I have several large oak trees in my front yard and the grass will not grow well at all in the surrounding area. Is there any kind of grass that would grow well in an area like this or in a shaded area? |
| Fescue will grow in the shade, but will have to be reseeded every few years or it will become thin and sparse. The problem with trying to grow grass under trees is that the soil tends to be dry because of the competition from the tree roots, the diversion of rainwater from the canopy also makes for dry soil, and of course the shade. While you can grow fescue type grasses, you might be happier with a ground cover type plant. Pachysandra thrives in dry shade, looks attractive, and doesn't need mowing.
