I'm looking for an evergreen tree for a planter that is only 18 inches deep, but 4 feet x 4 feet wide. I need something with height (5 to 6 feet to start). The area is shady with morning sun. Used to have ficus, but they outgrew the planter.

Instead of a tree, why not grow a tall, narrow shrub? You can trim many of them up to have a treelike appearance. And, a shrub is not likely to outgrow its spot as quickly as a tree. Some to consider:
Abelia grandiflora (Abelia)
Bamboo
Cherry laurel
Cleyera Japonica (Cleyera)
Euonymus japonicus (Euonymus)

Good luck with your new plant!
