I just purchased my first home. There are several palm trees that desperatly need trimming and I am not sure how to do it myself or what tools I will need.

You can use a tree saw to remove the dead fronds on your palm trees. I have a favorite tree saw - it folds in half for easy storage and locks in place when you move the blade out from the holder. The blade is only about 12 inches long but it is very sharp and cuts through the bases of dead fronds like going through butter. Look for it in your local garden center. Cutting off dead fronds is relatively easy. Just saw away, leaving only a few inches of "boot" (the area where the frond attaches to the trunk). Best wishes with your new landscape!
