when dead heading do you just remove the dead flower or do you go down the stem and clip?

The method depends upon the plant. Start by just pinching off the spent flower. If nothing else develops on the stem after a week or two, go ahead and snip the stem off. Petunias, for instance, are usually deadheaded by removing the spent flower plus some of the stem, which encourages additional stems. Pansies, on the other hand, are usually just groomed by removing only the flower. Try both ways with your plants to see how they react......
