The Q&A Archives: Premature Growth

Question: Hi.We purchased several berry plants this spring at Home Depot in Oregon. They include Blue Berry, Raspberry and Boysenberry plants in some dirt and plastic bags.We were told to put the in a cool dry place but. They are sprouting new leaves.Way to it best to transplant them to a larger container, move them into a cool but sunny room or? We want the best for the plants. please recommend.Thank

Answer: Thank goodness spring is just around the corner! Your plants are reacting to warm temperatures and increasing daylength. They think it is time to grow. I would put them into a large container and set them outdoors. They may lose the leaves they have developed but at least they will stop growing until you get them planted in their permanent spots. The cool outdoor weather will preserve them until you can get them in the ground. Best wishes with your new berry patch!
