Captan is a broad-spectrum, non-systemic fungicide. It works by inhibiting the growth of fungal spores. Captan is non-persistent (apply to plant leaves at 7 day intervals). It has a short persistence in the soil, and is not mobile. Captan rapidly degrades in sunlight. It was introduced in the 1950's and is used to treat seeds, bulbs before storage, grains, and as a garden fungicide. It controls many diseases of fruit, ornamental and vegetable crops. In addition to use as a root dip and seed treatment, captan is also used as a preservative for awnings, draperies and leather.
