The Q&A Archives: Mulch

Question: I live on an acreage with lots of pine trees. May I use the fallen needles as mulch in my flower/shrub garden or will it make the soil too acidic.

Answer: Pine needles are an excellent organic mulch material, especially for acid-loving plants. You can use them to side dress most plants, but don't overdo it by adding more year after year. Instead of using them all as mulch, why not leave some of them alone and allow them to decompose on their own. Best wishes with your garden!
