The Q&A Archives: Elephant Ear Bulbs

Question: I have elephant ear bulbs I want to plant, how can you tell which end goes down?

Answer: It is difficult to tell isn't it? It takes a little bit of investigation and honestly, guesswork. Look at the tuber, one end should have a little more "hairiness" to it. That is the end that down towards the ground. Also, one end may be slightly more tapered/pointy. That end goes up. If you really can't tell, plant the bulb sideways--the roots will find their way down, the shoots up.
