It's hard to predict what your groundhog (or woodchuck) will do. They are known to eat all sorts of plants, so I'm afraid your flowers aren't immune. Once a groundhog has set up it's home site--with its extensive system of burrows--it will be hard to discourage it to leave. (A dog is a great deterrent--but can also be hard on the flowers!) Try to clean up any brushy areas and rock piles, since they like to build their burrow entrances near those. Fencing might be a solution. If you find that your gardens are being damaged, you might have to resort to "relocating" the creature. There are live traps available--just note that groundhogs can be quite dangerous and you must use extreme care when dealing with them--especially if rabies is a possibility. Hopefully it won't come to that, though.
