There's no reason you cannot be successful with plants if you have a deck or patio, even if you have no experience. You just need to figure out how much sunshine the site gets and then choose the plants you like that are appropriate for the amount of sunshine available. For instance, if the area is sunny in the afternoon, you can plant heat loving plants such as lavender, tomatoes, eggplant, geraniums, marigolds and verbena. If the site gets only morning sun and afternoon shade, you can plant fuchsias, pansies, coleus and scarlet runner beans. If the site is completely shaded, you can plant lettuces, ferns, columbines and lobelia. So, figure out how much sun or shade you can provide and then choose your favorite plants. I'd plant in decorative containers. Choose pots with lots of drainage holes in the bottom and fill with moistened potting soil. Plant your favorite plants and then check them every 3-4 days to see if they need watering. Plants getting full sun will need more frequent watering than plants receiving full shade. You can feed your plants every 3-4 weeks with a half-strength dilution of water soluable fertilizer (such as Miracle Gro). Hope I've encouraged you enough to take the plunge and start a container garden! Best wishes with your new garden!
