The Q&A Archives: Planting Shallots

Question: I planted my shallots about 2 - 3 inches deep, thinking about their bulb size, etc. I now find out that they should have been planted just under the ground. Should I dig them up and redo... they have only been in the ground for a few days.

Answer: I'd dig them up and replant them so the tip of the clove is just barely covered with soil. While you're at it, dig the soil deeply, because shallots put down eight-inch feeder roots!
