Green Giant Arborvitae is an excellent choice for a screening hedge. It will eventually reach 40-50' in height with a spread of 15-18'. You'll want to provide enough room between and behind them to allow unobstructed growth. I'd plant them 6-8' from the fence and 8-10' apart so they will clear the fence and grow into one another when planted in a row. You can space them closer if you want a faster fill-in. Green Giant is highly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions and moisture levels but to get them off to a good start, build a water well just beneath them and fill with water once each week. If it's a really dry area (no lawns or other plants nearby that you regularly water), you may want to fill the basin, allow it to drain, then fill it a second time. This concentrates water over the root mass and ensures that it is thoroughly saturated each time you water. Once or twice a week, depending upon weather should be all your new arborvitaes will need. You can feed lightly each spring to encourage healthy new growth. Green Giants will grow rapidly once established - expect 12-18" of new growth each year. Best wishes with your new hedging screen!
