How can I fertilize a lawn that has dogs. My worry is they may eat the grass or foiliage that would contain chemicals that would make them sick.

If you follow the warnings on the fertilizer label, water well after application and then keep pets and children off the lawn for 24 hours, the fertilizer should not cause any harm. However, if you are really concerned about chemicals on your lawn, why not just spread a thin layer of organic compost over the entire lawn? Compost will provide nutrients as it breaks down and since it is organic, there are no chemicals to worry about.
