A thick, healthy lawn will crowd out weeds so the best approach is to dethatch, rake the debris, overseed, then put your lawn on a regular maintenance schedule of watering, mowing and feeding. You can overseed in April (which should give you plenty of time to dethatch, rake, etc.) Once the new seed is up and growing, mow consistently through the spring, summer and fall months, keeping the grass blades about 2 1/2 inches high. Mow often enough that you never have to remove more than one third of the blade height. You can leave the clippings on the lawn or bag them - either way is fine for your lawn. Plan to feed your lawn in April, June, September and late November. Lawns need deep watering once or twice a week, depending upon weather. By summer it should be thick and healthy enough to crowd out any invading weeds. Best wishes with your lawn!
