The key to growing peonies successfully in the South is in the planting. The real secret is that the eyes of the peony can't be very deep - plant only 2 to 2 1/2 inches below soil level. Any good garden soil is acceptable to peonies, as long as it drains well. If you're not sure of the drainage, incorporate some organic matter into the planting bed to help loosen the soil and help it drain quickly. You can use compost or shredded leaves as an organic amendment. Enjoy your peonies!
